Gunn was a student at the British American Drama Academy, in which she enrolled for a year in 1988. Pamela Adlon was her housemate when Gunn relocated from Laurel Canyon Los Angeles. Gunn has been known for playing Skyler White on Breaking, the AMC series Breaking. For her outstanding performance in 2013, and 2014 she received a nomination in the category of Primetime Emmy Award Outstanding Supporting Artist in a Drama Series. In August 2013 she published an opinion piece in The New York Times examining the negative reactions of people towards her role as a character.
